Safe Kids Greater Sacramento participated in the Elk Grove Unified School District Childspree event on July 27, 2013. Kohl’s department store of Elk Grove opened their doors early for a private shopping event for 100 children identified by school personnel as needing clothes for school. Each of these students was given $100 by the Elk Grove Optimist Club to go on a back-to-school shopping spree for new clothes and shoes—a childhood tradition their families would otherwise not be able to afford. The children also received 15% discount on all purchases during the event, a free backpack with school supplies, a haircut from Great Clips and a hot breakfast (compliments of Elk Grove Lions).
When the children finished their shopping they were fitted for booster seats in their cars by certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians from Safe Kids Greater Sacramento. Technician volunteers came from several of our member agencies including the California Highway Patrol, Kaiser Roseville, Rescue Fire Department, River Oak Center for Children and our lead agency, Mercy San Juan Medical Center. We hope that a safe ride to school, clothes that fit and school supplies will help these students have a great start to their school year.
